Bulgarian swimstar prepares for World Champs
Funkita athlete, Ekaterina Avramova of Bulgaria is ready to race this week at the World Championships in Barcelona. In 2009, the 21 year-old moved from Bulgaria to train in the UK under the guidance of Dave Heathcock at Ealing Swimming Club. She went on to represent Bulgaria at the London Olympics in the 100m backstroke. Ekaterina has faced many hurdles along the way but with the support of her family, friends and her country cheering her along, she continues to post impressive times on the world swimming stage. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Ekaterina as she prepares for World Champs.
You were recently in Portugal, what is it like training and competing there?
We were swimming outdoors in Portugal more than at home in London so that was a bonus. I won four gold medals, one silver and one bronze as well!
You also competed at the Scottish Open National Championships in Glasgow. Are you happy with the results and the new-look pool that will host next year's Commonwealth Games?
It was a hard meet without my coach and I'd flown straight from Portugal but I swam close to my best times and won one gold and three silver medals. The venue has been redone and they have rebuilt a new 50-metre pool with hundreds of seats in the stadium. It is an amazing pool and I have always loved it. That's why I decided to make it my last race before the Barcelona World Championships. I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy it and do great times in the pool next year.
What are you aiming for in Barcelona?
I had a good success in the 2011 World Championships, so I hope I can either repeat it or reach the finals this year.
We're looking forward to see howEkaterina races in the 100m and 200m Backstroke events at Barcelona. We'll certainly keep you updated and good luck Ekaterina!
