Bicton Pool nestled a long side the beautiful Swan River

Tucked away on the shores of the beautiful Swan River lies the Bicton Pool, a hidden treasure that is mostly frequented by dedicated lap-swimming locals or hundreds of water polo enthusiasts. The pool was purpose built for water polo by the members and supporters of the Melville Water Polo Club, Australia's oldest water polo club. The pool and facilities, held on a long-term lease from Melville City Council, were opened in 1980 and have hosted world-class international water polo tournaments such as The Tom Hoad Cup.

The salt water pools were originally heated through a heat-exchange system that used the hot waste-water from a sugar-mill located across the river. When the sugar-mill closed down, a bore was drilled and now the naturally-heated water is pumped to the surface and used in a complicated set of brass pipes in the side of the main pool that transfers the heat to the salt water. Another line deposits the mineral water directly into the thermal pool. The complex has a 33 metre lap pool and a geothermal hydrotherapy pool which is filled with warm natural artesian mineral water.
